Dr. Harvey Cushing trained in, worked at, and helped establish many of the top tier academic medical institutions in America. His careful observations laid the foundation for the discipline of medicine that many semi-mockingly think of as the most challenging of all specialties, neurosurgery. The NY Times has
a piece on him and his "library" of specimens (ie: brains) on the web. Very interesting history of medicine.
